Activity Highlights in December and January

Christmas events and visits
December 1 Twilight walk around the enchanting Christmas light display at the Berlin Botanischer Garten followed by hot mulled wine and seasonal delicacies.
December 3 The Spanish speakers’ group sing and play their favourite Christmas Carols – lyrics provided – with seasonal sweets and Gluhwein at Lietzensee.
December 7 Visit to Dresden Christmas market – one of the oldest and most beautiful in Germany.
December 9 Christmas dinner at Genazvale restaurant.
December 13 The English Speakers’s group read seasonal poems, sing, and sample some traditional Christmas fare.
December 14 The German Speakers celebrate Advent and talk about Christmas traditions in their native countries.
December 19 Visit to The English Choir Berlin’s Christmas Concert at the Kaiser-Gedächtnis-church on Breitscheidplatz.
Exploring Berlin
December 14 Visit to the Swiss embassy to learn about its history and unique location close to the wall in the government area.
January 17 2022 Guided tour of the Berlin Underground Museum to see countless artefacts from WW11 and learn about life for Berliners during the air raids that destroyed up to 80% of the city centre.
January 18 2022 Zoom event with Frances Durocher to see and learn about the ornate palace façade of the ancient M’shatta which was gifted to Berlin and is housed at the Islamic art museum, Pergamon.
Jan 28 2022 Leisurely walking tour through the Villenkolonie in the Grunewald with its lakes and historic villas many of which were abandoned during WW11.
Eating out in the New Year
January 18 2022 Enjoy a glass of fizz and good company at our New Year reception to welcome in 2022 – the BIWC’s 30th Anniversary year.
January 12 2022 Sample traditional German cooking on a lunchtime visit to Nante-Eck restaurant on Unter den Linden.
Jan 27 2022 Lunch at the elegant Restaurant am Steinplatz near Zoologischer Garten.
Post-Christmas Wellbeing
Jan 15 2022 An 8 kilometre hike along the beautiful Rummelsburger Bucht by the Spree, visiting the Stralau peninsula, the Insel der Jugend and the Soviet Memorial near Treptower Park.
Regular weekly walks will take place in December & January on Friday mornings (strolling pace) or Thursday mornings (regular pace) in the Tiergarten. On Wednesday mornings, there are 6km walks around Schlachtensee.
January 31 2022 A swim and sauna at the historic Oderberger Pool followed by a healthy brunch.
Many of the club’s specialist groups (book groups, language groups, etc) will meet during December & January, including The Science group which will be taking a dive into astrophysics!
