Club Monthly Meeting – An Introduction to Ikebana
At our August monthly meeting we will be joined by Helga Lohmann-Herweg, who has sent us the following description of her presentation.
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging. The meditative practice of ikebana is also known as Kado, ‘Way of Flowers’.
In the Western world, flowers are predominantly emphasised. However, ikebana emphasises the importance of lines and free space. It is only on closer inspection that the diversity of plants in terms of line, colour, shape, surface, size, and character.
I have been deeply impressed by Japanese culture since a young age. In 1997, I saw a fascinating exhibition at the “Zitadelle Spandau” and signed up for ikebana classes. Now I am a teacher at the Sogetsu School in Tokyo. My artist name, given to me by the school, is ‘Ayami’. The Sogetsu school is one of the youngest and most modern schools, founded in 1927, it also permits the use of non-floral materials.
I have participated in several exhibitions, including those in Rostock, Rathenau, BUGA in Marzahn, and Berlin… I would be happy to introduce you to my hobby in more de-tail on 5 August.
