Volunteers’ party 2023
It takes a lot of helping hands to provide interesting events and the necessary support services for over two hundred members--but we do have helping hands! In celebration of our numerous volunteers, we offer a special event to them every year. Here are a few of our thirty-plus volunteers enjoying a proper English afternoon tea--and a view of what they were enjoying--at the Teehaus im englischen Garten.
Excellence in Service Awards 2023
Congratulations to the recipients of this year's Excellence in Service Awards, Angela, Brigitte, Jackie, Karen, Christine, Barbara, and Monika—and thanks for all the work they have done to keep the Club running smoothly and to provide events that we value! Angela Andersen Angela puts in an enormous amount of preparation for each presentation for the Science group. She has used Zoom to keep the group going during the pandemic and later to provide flexible access to members who may have difficulties coming to a physical meeting. She is well informed and always ready to help anyone with anything if
The BIWC thanks its Volunteers
The last day of summer! It was quite autumnal but we braved the weather with the help of mushroom heaters and sat outside. 40 volunteers who actively support the Club in various functions sat around a very long table. Unfortunately, not all of our active volunteers could participate, but those present thought of those who could not to attend, such as Thora, who, after 25 years, will no longer coordinate the Morning Book group. Mary Lynn has also given up her Exploring Berlin group. Thankfully, the group will continue with new Coordinators Inga and Monika. All of us have
Special Interest and Neighbourhood Group Coordinators Meeting
Two times a year BIWC'S Vice-President organises a meeting with the Special Interest and Neighbourhood Group Coordinators. After 18 months with no activities in person, it was a priority for me to organise this Coordinators’ meeting as soon as possible after becoming BIWC's new Vice President in 2021 and as soon as certain pandemic restrictions had been lifted. We met at Café Chapeau on a Tuesday in August. On arrival, we all could just not stop laughing. What a joy to see each other again, a warm welcome to all the Coordinators and Inga, our new President. At the
Thank you Thora, Morning Book Group Coordinator for 25 years
We are sad to hear that Thora is retiring as Coordinator of the Morning Book Group. She founded the group in 1995 and has hosted it in her home in Berlin-Nikolassee ever since, in the sunroom or on the terrace overlooking her garden. We enjoyed her hospitality and the lively discussions on a wide variety of books from many countries. These were proposed by members of the group who came from Australia, India, Pakistan, England, Canada, Russia and the USA. We thus got to know other cultures and peoples through their literature. We want to thank her sincerely for her
Excellence in Service Awards 2021
Congratulations Kathy and Joan. Both received the Excellence in Service Award in July 2021. Joan has been a member of the Club for quite a number of years and has been a volunteer on the Executive Committee (EC), serving in two different positions; one year as the Vice President and two years as the Web & IT Coordinator. She also co-organises the Tiergarten Walking Group and Pilates classes. Since stepping down from the the EC, Joan agreed to become a member of the Web Team. This was very good news for the Club and it meant that her skills were
