Tours, Talks, and Service
Every Tuesday English-speaking play group, open to non-members. This is an outreach service activity, bringing our expertise in connecting people to a group at risk of isolation: parents of babies and toddlers. (Not on 24 and 31 December.)
Friday, 6 December A visit to a special Christmas market at Rixdorf (Neukölln).
All the classic stalls with decorations for Christmas, sweets, food and drinks, choirs who sing Christmas carols and other performances. But there are also exhibitions of the traditional life in this Bohemian village.
Saturday, 14 December On the occasion of the 650th anniversary of Britz: a visit to a historical exhibition at Schloss Britz and a visit to the fairytale Christmas market on the Schloss Britz estate.
Saturday, 14 December Our popular Art Discussion group takes a look at Romanticism in art, exploring how romantic painters challenged traditional values in art.
Saturday, 14 December A visit to the DDR Museum, where you can experience aspects of life in Cold War East Germany: take a seat in an East German living room, sit in an interrogation room, or drive a Trabi.
Tuesday, 17 December On a special Christmas tour of the Nikolaiviertel, follow the evolution of Christmas tradition in Berlin from the arrival of Christianity (when Christmas celebrations were still largely infused with pagan traditions), to the more private and introspective Protestant Christmas in Prussia; find out how Christmas was celebrated by the poor during the Industrial Revolution, and where the rich would have done their Christmas shopping …
Food, Drink, and Friends
Friday, 6 December Our annual Winter Holiday Party with dinner, drinks, conversation, and magical entertainment.
Monday, 9 December A festive afternoon at Princess Cheesecake in Charlottenburg, with coffee (or something stronger) and an amazing array of cheesecakes.
Friday, 13 December St Nicholas Day party. Carols and finger food and spiced punch … and maybe a little gift for partygoers from St. Nicholas!
Sunday, 22 December Meet & Greet: coffee morning open to present and prospective members. Come and get to know us!
Also, under the title “Body and Soul,” a member offers an evening together, at a mutually convenient time for participants: “I would like to offer a space to combine a bit of inner awareness with a nice light meal, which combines my passion for cooking with my desire to make the world a little happier.”
Books and Films
Wednesday, 4 December The Poetry for Pleasure group meets to read and discuss favorite poems in multiple languages. The theme for the December meeting is seasonal poetry.
Wednesday, 11 December The Biographies Book Group discusses Francoise Frenkel’s memoir, A Bookshop in Berlin. Frenkel tells how she created the bookshop in question—a French bookshop—in the 1920s, and how she fled from the Nazis in the late 1930s.
The Film Buffs, a WhatsApp group, goes to the movies together on an ad hoc basis.
