New pandemic rules mean that to enter a restaurant, bar, café, or other public indoor space you need to be fully vaccinated or recovered AND have a current negative Schnelltest (in the previous 24 hours). Those who are boosted don’t need to provide a negative test, but must have proof of their Booster vaccination. Christmas events and visits December 1 Twilight walk around the enchanting Christmas light display at the Berlin Botanischer Garten followed by hot mulled wine and seasonal delicacies. December 3 The Spanish speakers’ group sing and play their favourite Christmas Carols – lyrics provided – with seasonal sweets and Gluhwein at Lietzensee. December 7 Visit to Dresden Christmas market - one of the oldest and most beautiful in Germany. December 9

Stay fit & healthy Go Hiking - a hike through three of Berlin's many parks. Stroll in the Park, Walking Tiergarten, Walking Schlachtensee - walk every week. Get to know Berlin better Exploring Berlin will do a tour in English of the Archenhold Observatory. Art & Architecture visit the newly opened Museum für Asiatische Kunst @ the Humboldt Forum. North-East Neighbourhood Group visit the Documentation Center (Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation - Flucht, Vertreibung, Versöhnung). South-West Neighbourhood Group will tour the Dahlem Historical Center. Meet & TrEAT Cook In & Dine Out will enjoy a Greek lunch @ a member's house. Greek members

The two Walking Schlachtensee groups normally stop off for refreshments @ the Fischerhütte after their exertions. In October, there will also be a special two-hour tour of the Onkel Toms Hütte Housing Development followed by refreshments. NEW GROUP - Go Hiking Berlin: In October the group will walk from Rehberge in Wedding to the Hauptbahnhof and go to lunch there. GET TO KNOW BERLIN Compass: will visit the Frank Suplie Atelier. Summer Lunch in White @ Café am Neuen See 2021
Members both young and old turned out on this beautiful sunny day in the picturesque Café am Neuen See in the middle of Tiergarten. Looking stunning, all members wore white outfits and even bigger smiles as they met friends. After all the trials of Covid they were looking healthy and happy. At a leisurely pace, 42 members settled down to delicious beer garden food of chicken, Leberkäse, salmon, salads and plenty of beer and wine. Our location was delightful, sitting at the side of the lake, with families out rowing, surrounded with greenery and having a feeling of being on

Once again, this month sees a mixture of many in-person activities and a few Zoom conferences. Two new activity groups will be starting up soon. Diana's group Stroll in the Park in August and Anne Marie will be starting the Health and Well-being Group in September. Cook In & Dine Out: summer lunch in white @ the Café am Neuen See. Kool Kiez go for lunch @ Sagano and Asian lounge. English Speakers will meet up @ Käks and the French Speakers @ Eiscafé La Piazza. The South-West Neighbourhood Group go for a walk along the lakeside from Glienicke Brücke

The Afternoon Book Group remains a Zoom meeting this month. They will discuss The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante. German Speakers keep in touch via Zoom twice a month. English Speakers will be discussing the life of Thomas Becket via email. Otherwise, many of our activities will no longer be virtual meetings and members can finally get together for walks, café, restaurant or exhibition visits without restrictions. Garden & Nature: this group will visit the Bienengarten Berlin Kool Kiez go for lunch @ the Italian restaurant San Marino The Evening Group will take a look @ the exhibition the Mystery of Banksy

Once again, many of our activities are online but some groups will meet up outdoors. The North-East Neighbourhood Group will do a walking tour of old Berlin. The South-West Neighbourhood Group will walk through the Glienicker Park and the Tiergarten Walking Group continues to meet up every Thursday. Evening and Morning Meet & Greets as Zoom events. Our Social Events Team and our Membership Secretary have organised a Virtual Game – Pharaoh’s Treasure Hunt. In their final session before the summer break, LovinGerman will discuss a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Australian Soprano Diipti Firmstone introduces us to
BIWC’s Activity Highlights in May 2021
In May, two of our activity groups will meet up in person. The Tiergarten Walking Group has resumed its walks around the Tiergarten park. The South-West Neighbourhood Group will go for a historical discovery walk around Schmargendorf. All our other activities will take place via zoom conference: LovinGerman meet every alternate Tuesday. In their first get-together, they will discuss vocabulary related to death, mourning and condolences. In their second meeting, they will talk about the use of a basic word that can be found in many compound words. Member Frances Durocher will give a presentation on the Ishtar Gate (Pergamon Museum)
